Scott Horner

“My favorite part of venture investing is the opportunity to see so many unique technologies being applied by startups across such a diversity of challenges—it is truly a rewarding experience to see both the positive impact these companies have on consumers/society and their ability to drive meaningful investment returns.”

Biggest passion outside work:

When not in the office, Scott can typically be found out in nature—either on a mountain bike, skis or in his kayak—and usually with his family in tow.

Before joining DSM, Scott was a Managing Director at Middleland Capital in Washington D.C. where he built and managed a portfolio of technology investments across the life sciences sector, including functional ingredients, therapeutics, agriculture, diagnostics, and animal health.  Prior to Middleland, he was a Managing Director with Third Security, a private equity firm focusing on biotechnology and pharmaceutical opportunities, where he both led direct investments and took interim operating roles within portfolio companies.  Over his career, Scott’s 20+ portfolio companies have raised well over $2B USD and realized multiple public and private exits.

Scott holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry from the State University of New York, and a Ph. D. in Bioorganic Chemistry from The University of Rochester, School of Medicine.
